If you're getting random disconnections, it could also be a weak network connection flaking out. Have you attempted manually setting the line speed and duplex on the network interface(s)? I personally never trust that.

But the Mac Server network shares that the machine is also connected to don't disconnect and there's no noticeable interruption to the internet either. Maybe the internal network ports are faulty (I've tried both the built in ports, with the same result). I've been sat at the machine when the Finder pops up the disconnection notification but I can ping the server that has apparently disconnected and I can also reconnect to it as well and remount the shares.
